11 TIPS TO STAY SHARK AWARE THIS SUMMER

SHARK EDUCATION 🦈 💙
⠀
Let us be safe and respectful this summer ⬇⠀
⠀
With so many shark sightings up and down our coast lately (and with the days getting warmer and warmer!) we want to do our very best to avoid shark encounters.⠀
⠀
While close shark encounters are relatively rare, there are things you can do to reduce the risk!⠀
⠀
1. Be cautious being in the water at dawn, dusk or night.⠀

2. Avoid being in the ocean alone.⠀

3. Be cautious when entering the water after a storm or heavy rainfall.⠀

4. Steer clear of drop-offs to deeper water or river mouths.

5. Don't enter the water where aggressive sharks commonly gather.⠀

6. Leave the water quickly and calmly if fish begin to gather in large schools, jump out of the water or behave erratically.⠀

7. Avoid splashing and move smoothly in the water.⠀

8. Swim at beaches that are patrolled by surf life savers.⠀

9. Do not wear shiny swimwear or accessories and try to wear bland, darker colours.⠀

10. If you spot a shark, don't act aggressively. This may provoke them!⠀

11. If a shark starts to approach you, be prepared to defend yourself. ⠀
⠀
Remember we are the ones spending time in their homes. Sharks are animals; they are not evil (even if Jaws I II and III convinced us otherwise!).

Every time we go into the ocean we are taking a risk. ⠀

⠀
We are SO LUCKY to be able to share the ocean with these wonderful creatures. So let's enjoy the warmer weather and let's respect our sealife 💙⠀
